Glimpse Correspondant in Chile

Exciting News:

I was selected as the filmmaker for this fall's Glimpse Correspondent Program!  I'll be producing films about stories abroad in Chile with the guidance and mentorship of the editors at Glimpse.  Meanwhile, I'll receive free tuition to MatadorU's Travel Journalism courses on writing, photography, and filmmaking where I hope to develop my craft and perhaps learn how to make a lifestyle and profession from traveling.  The program also includes a stipend after my finished films are published on the Matador website.

5 Weeks in Chile

Yoyo!  Marty here!  I made it to Chile!  I'm living in the south Biobio region in Concepcion for the next 5 months or so while volunteering to teach English with the English Opens Doors program.

I wrote a fun post with photos about my experience thus far.  Check it out on my personal blog at:

I participated with an English Winter Camp last week.  Here's a lip dub video the students choreographed.

Take care!

Putting the "Pan" in The Pan-American Dream

Okay! Here is my exciting personal news! It was a rainy day in Puerto Rico, I've been taking classes last week and this week to receive my Living Foods Lifestyle certificate, I'm still working full time, and preparing to leave the Ann Wigmore Natural Health Institute (for now)... so I'm exhausted. The video may not express my excitement as well as I would like... but I'm excited!!!

(P.S. I'm becoming conscious of my "And" fillers and am working to remove those for more concise videos when I'm too tired or lazy to edit.)

LET'S GO ON A 60 DAY TRAVEL ADVENTURE! VOTE FOR OUR VIDEO!

Yo!  Marty here!  I have some momentum building on this project!  I'm volunteering at the Rincon Film Festival in Puerto Rico next week and recruiting for a film workshop- I have 1 participant so far.  There will also be another cool announcement which I can't say yet!  But the coolest announcement is this:

We've submitted a video entry for Viator's Dream Travel Video job!  They're looking for 2 more travel videographer's to partake on a 60 Day adventure in either North America or Europe starting May or June!

You can vote once a day.

Kelly and I would be perfect for this!  It would really build our resume and open the door for traveling filmmaker possibilities!

Thanks for reading and voting!

Also, there's a new post on my blog about my experience in Puerto Rico the last month.  Check it out!

Take care of yourselves and stay tuned!

Love + Gratitude,

The Dreams + Adventures Live On: Puerto Rico + Chile?

Hola!

Marty here giving you an update from Puerto Rico where I'm volunteering at the Ann Wigmore Natural Health Institute while continuing to learn the Living Foods Lifestyle which I began studying last summer while interning at the Creative Health Institute.

It's been a while since there's been any momentum on this project, which I see as an ongoing adventure that was on hold.  What I've found over the years is that I get energized by big ideas and goals which seem to alter and change over time.  They may not turn out as expected, but rather manifest eventually along a similar path with guiding intentions.

While reflecting after a break from directing commercials, I still realize that one of my favorite jobs and what gives me much joy is teaching; Not only film and photography, but my new interest in living foods.  Before leaving for Puerto Rico, I prepared an ambitious raw living foods for 20+ friends and family while teaching the basics of the lifestyle and demoing food preparation from pastas, salads, dressing, milks, pates, ferments, and desserts.

I'm happy to be in Puerto Rico where I'm rejuvenating some creative inspiration.  Last week at the market I met some people from the Rincon Cultural Center.  I'm going to begin Spanish lessons with them in a week or two and I'm in the process of setting up some youth film workshops.  Hopefully I can partner with the Rincon Film Festival in April.

Kelly's in Colorado working as a snowboard instructor and may be coming to Puerto Rico in May.

We're also applying to teach English in Chile from July 23-November 30.

I'm also writing about my experience in Puerto Rico on my personal Changing Blog.  I just wrote a post with several photos on an awesome rainforest adventure.

Stay Tuned + Keep Dreaming!

Our Alaskan Road Trip in Less than a Minute

Hey Y'all,

We finally had time to sort through our ginormous amount of videos and photos.  It's been a long time coming... We cut the following spot out of the footage we shot.  Also, big thanks to Josh Condon who composed the music and is one of our Kickstarter backers!  Hope you enjoy!

A general update:
Kelly and I are currently doing independent adventures.  Kelly just became a raft guide in Vail, CO and I'm interning at the Creative Health Institute in Michigan.  I'm writing about my experience at CHI and transitioning to a 100% raw living foods diet HERE.

We'd also like to thank our Kickstarter backers who supported us to make this happen.  We'll keep ya updated as the adventures continue!

How Much Gas to Alaska? Our Gas Log

Here's our gas log for our first Alaskan road trip:  Ann Arbor, MI to Alaska and back.  [Click on images to enlarge.]

For long road trips, the gas log is a helpful resource to keep track of your miles, money spent, cost of gas, and prepare for the future or the returning route of your journey.  It helps you plan, especially if you might need to make additional money on the road.

Here are some estimated stats from our gas log:

$1555.19 total spent on gas

$626.77 spent on gas from Ann Arbor, MI to Alaska border

+13,000 miles traveled over 3 months

30 mi/gal average in 2006 Chevy Aveo FULLY loaded with gear and 2 people

$5.36 / gal - Dawson City, Yukon - Most expensive gas.  Gas is more expensive in Canada and as you travel further north

0 flat tires.  The majority of roads are pretty good!

If you're thinking of an Alaskan road trip, we hope this helps!

Do it!
